BATS BATS [Image: crazytalk.gif] BATS BATS BATS!

Awww, very cute little grey pups.
This picture is from Australia Bat Hospital.
The parents are often shot or caught on a barbed wire fence
or electrocuted on power lines.
For reasons unclear to me they wrap them in cleaning cloths.
I guess they're about the right size and tidy to look at, it also
keeps them from hurting themselves and each other climbing
around in the pen, plus they're easy to grab and feed.
At that age they're used to being held in that position, securely
tucked under mum's wing, even while she's flying, or swathed
in her wings nursing as she hangs upside-down in a roust tree.

BONUS Music: Share it while I still can... Undecided

One of the folks in our bio dept. does bats as her major research focus. Naturally, she's known as the bat lady. Smile

She works on the small brown bats around here--other small species, but all around here. All of them, all the species in the area, are suffering a hellish population decline caused by a mold infection that kills them.

RE: 2011/365
I used to make and sell bat houses to the local Wild Birds Store. I made several and donated them to the Campfire Girls summer camp. It was amazing how much the houses helped the bat population there. I got a lot of positive feed back from the volunteer naturalists.

yeah, "White Nose Syndrome" is effecting our native population too..

..and the Bat Houses may help, since it's contagious among large
populations. Breaking up the colonies into smaller units may slow
the spread long enough to give them a chance to find the cure.
